MAXIMIZING THE “TAONG GRASA” IN THE CITY OF MANILA
From the busy streets to the side streets, from the national roads to national parks, we often see a taong grasa walking or sleeping in the streets. Their mere appearance sends a negative or disturbing image to the city. If I were a tourist and not a manileno I would be afraid to see a taong grasa walking naked or simply just eating garbage. My own experience and also the rampant appearance of taong grasa in the strrets is what I think built my apathy towards them. But what if, I was attacked by these mentally challenged individuals (a walking schezoprenic as one of my professors once said), what if I am a tourist or a researcher writing up about the beauty of the city? What If the taong grasa suddenly got sick of it all and decides to attack everyone on his sight? I am not saying that taong grasas are just sore to the eyes of the mentally fit or the “normal” persons. I am seeing opportunities and hopes for these social outcasts.
Recommendations
Clear the streets of Manila of taong grasas
What I mean here is not like the clearing operations done by the MMDA to the sidewalk vendors, rather, taking out all the taong grasas in the streets in the most humanely act possible and shelter them to educate or help them in their emotional stress. Or, recommend them to a particular bureau if their condition is too “unstable”
Maximize the potentials of the taong grasas to become a social tool rather than a distraction
After sheltering all the taong grasas, its to educate them, see if they can work as a lease hand to a automobile shop, a junk shop recyclist, work in a carwash station, metro aide, or whatever skills training is most appropriate for them. (A college professor?) hehehe
Help promote tourism in Manila
I don’t intend to make them tour guides, rather the city of manila can boast that its city has no taong grasas or the city have converted the taong grasas into a succesfull sales manager or a productive member of the society.
Sense of security to the visitors and children of Manila
With the mental instability of some of the taong grasas walking in the streets, it is such a scare for some of the students in manila. Even a tourist might be discouraged to return to manila.
Educate people on how to deal with taong grasas
After doing some research. Make a primer and distribute it to the people in manila. Include important matters like how to react in given situations and the phone numbers of authorities to call in a situation with a taong grasa
